I am really sad to see Lil go. It’s like she got punished for actually being a non-professional singer. I thought American Idol was supposed to be about finding talent that was unknown, and then giving them a chance to bloom. Adam Lambert, Danny Gokey and Matt Giraud were PROFESSIONAL musicians on Day one. Lambert has been working since he was 10. Is someone surprised that he is more comfortable on a stage than a housewife?
No one who is left has the voice that Lil Rounds has… She gave me chills when she would just nail a note. I’ve got just two words for the people who voted her off… “Jennifer Hudson”
So what do you think? Is Idol really even a contest to find undiscovered talent, or is it just a showplace for experienced musicians to get yet another chance at fame?
The Top 7 on American Idol performed again last night, because Matt Giraud was saved by the judges last week. The theme was Disco, and it was a very fun show. Lil Rounds sang Chaka Khan - I’m Every Woman, and it was a solid performance. However, she is still struggling to find herself.

Tonigt David Archuleta will be on the results show.
Here is what the other contestants sang:
Kris Allen
Donna Summer - She Works Hard For The Money
The Top 7 remaining contestants performed on American Idol last night. Last night’s theme was Songs from the Movies. Contestants had to pick a song that has appeared on a Movie Soundtrack. Lil Rounds sang Amanda McBroom - Bette Midler - The Rose. It is an incredibly difficult song to sing and Lil Rounds truly tried to make it her own. However, that still did not satisfy Simon Cowell. Simon didn’t have anything good to say at all about Lil’s performance.
Since the theme of the show was Movies. The world famous director Quentin Tarantino was the special guest. Taratino is the director from some of the most successful movies relesed in the last 15 years. He directed the movies Pulp Fiction, Resevoir Dogs and the Kill Bill movies.
After Simon Cowell gave his comments Lil Rounds was very upset and she had some comments for him. Here is what she said, “I really want to say something quick Simon. You guys told me to be an artist, and when I heard this song I thought it was a beautiful song, and I put my own bit into it, because I am into the R&B, and the Soul and the Gospel. And I put it in there.”
There was a slight change this week. Only two judges gave comments because of the disaster which took place last week when American Idol ran 8 minutes too long.
Judges Comments:
“Lil you could not have sung a more beautiful lyric thanks to the writing of Amanda McBroom. It’s one of the most beautiful songs, and I am sure to paraphrase one of the lines and all of the contestants will agree, ‘Sometimes the road is really long, but it is a road that is worth taking’. Especially when you have made it this long, Lil. Congratulations”
“I have absolutely no idea what you just said there. Ok listen Lil, once again I going to say this to you. I think you are getting this completely wrong. The song was too soft for you. It was too middle of the road. You had some nice moments in there, but there are no excuses anymore Lil. You are not the artist I thought we met 7 or 8 weeks ago. I’m getting frustrated.”
Here is what the other contestants sang:
Allison Iraheta
Aerosmith - I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing

Lil Rounds had a tough night last night on American Idol. Lil Rounds sang Tina Turner - What’s Love Got To Do With It. While vocally she put on a very solid performance all 4 judges gave her negative comments. They felt that it was a copycat performance, rather than a different artists interpretation of a song.
The theme for the show was, ‘the year you were born’. Meaning the Top 8 had to choose a song from the year they were born. Lil was born on October 20, 1984, which is why she picked the Tina Turner song.
The judges do have a point with their comments. Lil wasn’t Lil last night. Rather than singing in her own voice she was trying to sing with that distinct raspy Tina Turner voice. Lil Rounds still put on a great demonstration of her vocal abilities, however she didn’t really make the song her own. It is at this stage of the show where this becomes more and more important.

We can only hope that she will survive the vote, because Lil Rounds is a wonderfully talented singer, and she deserves to continue in this competition.
Here is what the judges had to say:
Paul Abdul said, “Ok, this is what I am going to have to say on this one. This was the week that I thought it was really important for you to take your own liberties. Go outside of the box, and prove to us that you know exactly who you are as an artist. However, I find myself repeating saying you’re a brilliant vocalist, we know that. We also know that, that gets you only so far. If you’re not able to take the reigns… To Ricky Miner, great band, I just think that you need to lead Ricky and the band into creating your own niche of a song that is so classic, Tina Turner. I don’t feel that you did and I’m really worried that it’s becoming a beautiful karaoke rendition, and you’re wonderful, and you’re much bigger than that.”
Simon Cowell said, “I think what Paula was trying to say was we are not looking for a second or third rate version of Tina Turner, because that’s what it was. Even to the point where you were copying the way that she walks. So it became one of those ghastly copycat performances other than some nice points at the end. It’s literally like we have lost you. I have no idea who you are. You are not making the impact you should be making on this show. Basically because you are either getting wrong advice or you’re making bad decisions and you’ve got to start becoming original. You’ve got to take a song that no one’s done before and make it your version on the show. Not some cheap karaoke version.”
Randy Jackson said, “Listen, we all love you. You are mad, mad talented. You definitely look hot tonight, but what those two just said is really important because it’s really real. I mean we tell you guys each week, you remind me of this, you remind me of that, you remind me of Mariah Carey, Keisha Cole whatever.. So you know what your wheel house is because it’s almost like you aren’t listening to us, cause you can do a lot of stuff, but Tina Turner is not you. It’s not. And that year there are an amazing bunch of songs you could have sung that could have been really you and you could have whoa’ed em’ out vocally, but it’s just not clicking right now. It’s just not happening. I don’t know.”
Kara DioGuardi said, “It is about making that leap from a singer to an artist, and that’s where you are struggling right now. Knowing yourself. And if you look at you up there when you are performing, your lower range, it really suffers. You’ve got to find your power down there. It can’t all be about when you’re up here. We have to see it throughout the whole song.”
Michael Sarver was voted off American Idol last night. For the second week in a row he was in the bottom 2. Last week he was in the bottom 2 however, it was Alexis Grace who was voted off the show. This week Michael Sarver and Matt Giraud were in the bottom 2. This time Michael was sent home.
Michael Sarver was allowed a second chance to sing “The Temptations - Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” hoping that the judges would overrule the votes of viewers. However, after the judges confered Simon Cowell said, “Michael, you’re going home. Sorry.”
So, we are down to 9 contestants and the competition is heating up. The nine remaining contestants on American Idol Season 8 are, Allison Iraheta, Adam Lambert, Anoop Desai, Danny Gokey, Kris Allen, Lil Rounds, Matt Giraud, Megan Corkrey and Scott MacIntyre.
Last night Lil Rounds sang ‘Love is like a Heatwave’, by Martha and the Vandellas. The Supremes also covered this song which is probably the most popular version.
It was Motown Night last night on American Idol. Each contestant had to pick a song from the Motown era for this weeks show. There were 2 special guests this week, Berry Goody who is the founder of Motown records and a legend in the Motown music seen. The second guest was Smokey Robinson who help the contestants get ready for the show. Once again Danny Gokey put on a great show.
Lil Rounds received a bit of criticism from the judges last night. She certainly didn’t have a bad performance, however it wasn’t her best performance. The judges on American Idol have a long history of criticising contestants when the contestant is singing their genre of music. Lil Rounds does have a voice and feel which is perfect for Motown music, however she didn’t steal the show.
The judges did make some valid points. Lil does have a big, powerful voice and it can be difficult for a singer to use that voice in a fast, up-tempo song like ‘Heatwave’. However, Lil Rounds is such a talented singer that she still put on a great show.

Here is what the judges had to say about it:
Randy Jackson said, “Yo. All right listen to this. Lil Rounds. Lil Rounds what’s going down baby? How you been, good? All right listen to this. That wasn’t the right song for me, for you, I mean you’ve got mad, crazy vocals. You got that big ol’ voice. By the time you get to the end of the song “yeah, yeah, yeah” it was cool right, but the front of the song was a little bit tortured for me. You’ve got unbelievable vocals. It just wasn’t the right song for me, for you, and I fell like you were rushing through the whole song because when you got that big ol’ voice you need a little bit more space in the bars, for that up-tempo thing. Up-tempo things are a little bit different for someone with a big voice, because you wanna feel it. So it just wasn’t my best performance for me, for you.”
Kara DioGuardi said, “Yeah, you know Lil you look great. You really do. It’s a beautiful dress. You’re beautiful girl, but I Gotta say you were the diva tonight. This is what everyone was waiting to hear. This was your week. This was your week and if you don’t nail this week… I gotta tell you I don’t think this was the right song. We all know Lil can sing. You’ve got this voice that if you had melodies that breathed more you could have interpreted more, but you didn’t. You stayed kind of true to what the song was and we need more from you, right now. And you were screaming at certain points, and I don’t ever want to hear you screaming. You’re an effortless singer, and I didn’t get that from you.”
Paul Abdul said, “I disagree! I disagree completely with these two! I do agree with the fact that you look unbelievable. Your classic throwback mixed with catour chic. It’s amazing because you didn’t change anything musically, but it’s what you do vocally that feels fresh and like I heard classic song for the very first time and I think you owned that song.”
“Look Lil we could all see from the film why you got emotional and how much this all means to you. I think what you did tonight was kind of tribute to the authentic sound of Motown. However, I wouldn’t have chosen the song because I don’t believe it gives you a moment. I agree with Randy, it sounded like it was too fast. If you had chosen something like “I heard it through the Grapevine” and done something incredible. You could’ve had a moment tonight. It was authentic Lil, but you are, let me remind everybody, that you are one of the best singers we’ve got in this competition. So, all we want, I’m just dying for you to do what you did a couple weeks ago where you just blow everybody away. You can’t do with a song like that though.”
Lil Rounds sang Martina McBride - Independence Day. Last night was Country theme on American Idol. The judges didn’t give her great comments, because she didn’t personalize it too much. Prior to her performance she said that she wasn’t going to spin it too much towards R&B, that she wanted to honour the country music theme. She certainly didn’t sound bad. In fact she sound really good. She has such a stong clean voice that she really can attack most types of songs and they will sound great. I do think it could have been even better if she put an R&B twist on it. I think that is really what the judges were trying to say. I don’t think you could ever put down her singing.
Randy Travis was the special guest. He helped the contestants prepare for the show. He commented that Lil Rounds has a very powerful voice.

Here is what the judges had to say:
Randy Jackson said, “So Lil Rounds, it was a very interesting ambitious song choice. In front part I found myself struggling a little bit. When you hit your power zone, you hit the chorus you opened up because you’re big power singer. You got that big ol’ range, a go a bit better but I don’t know, it didn’t feel comfortable. I’m just keeping it real. I’m just keeping it real. She was all right. It just wasn’t great.”
Kara DioGuardi said, “Here’s the thing. We all know your great singer, you’d have to be deaf to not know you’re a great singer. It’s about, the second half we start to get the Lil rounds we fell in love with. The girl who’s hit those notes way up and the sky and we I missed that at the beginning. And there were other songs you can chosen, but you know what you did what you felt and that’s part of being an artist. You’re standing your ground. So I’d give props for that. Is it you’re best performance? It’s not your best, but good.”
Paul Abdul said, “Lil I think everything’s going right for you tonight. I think your vocals were spot on. I think the hair, the makeup, the clothing are beautiful. The only thing in reference to what these two are saying it would have went better if you didn’t sing two verses, and you only sang 1 verse and went right to the chorus. So that your vocals could go piercing through. You know that when your voice Pierce’s through its obvious why you are one of the favorites.”
Simon Cowell said, “Look Little. Lil. For me it kinda came over as if you were one of those girls who have to sing at a wedding and are forced to sing a song that somebody’s requested and felt and looked uncomfortable. Because we were comparing you when we first met you to somebody like Mary J who had a kind of rawness. There are a million, a billion songs you could have picked.”
Here is what the other contestants sang:
Anoop Desai
Willie Nelson - You were always on my mind
Alexis Grace
Dolly Parton - Jolene
Allison Iraheta
Patti Lovely - Blame it on your heart
Kris Allen
Garth Brooks - You make you feel my love
Last night we received the results show from the first night of singing (Top 13). No surprise at all that Lil Rounds is safe. There is no way that she would be voted off American Idol at this point. Jasmine Murray and Jorge Nunez were voted off the show. Jasmine Murray sang “I’ll Be There” and Jorge Nunez sang “Never Gonna Say Goodbye”. Neither performance was great, but neither was that bad either. There is a very talented group of singers on American Idol this year.
The show featured an appearance by Kelly Clarkson, and she sang her new single “my life would suck without you”. There was also a fun performance by all of the American Idol contestants singing a mix of Michael Jackson and Jackson 5 songs. Don’t forget that this week’s theme was Michael Jackson.
Great Job Lil. Can’t wait to see what you do next week.
Lil Rounds opened up the Top 13 American Idol show last night with a dazzling performance. It was Michael Jackson night and contestants had to pick a song by Michael Jackson or Jackson 5. Lil Rounds sang ‘The way you make me feel’, and she really put the pressure on the other contestants. She didn’t seemed to be nervous at all.
It is just not possible that Lil Rounds will be voted off the show tonight. She is such a talented singer and the way she opened Idol last night was spectacular!

What the judges said!
“Lil Rounds what’s up baby, what’s up? All right so check it out. This is the way, this is the way we kick off season eight. Man let me tell you something. You know what great about you. This is a Michael Jackson song. He sang the ‘whatever’ a lot of it. You just put a whole new spin on it, with your kind of bluesy, R&B, old soul vibe. Dude you made the song new again. I love this. This is the way to start it baby! Yeah! Yeah! You got it!”
“I mean it’s perfect that you come out because, it’s like what Lil just did. Everybody’s Gotta be like ‘Ohh’. Wow! I need to definitely step that up running. Holy God! But the other thing is, I hope we get to hear you on the radio, because you are great! And you know that and note, that thing was sick! She just snuck that right there. Good job girl.”
“Lil I’d like to compliment you on how the softness, the palette of what you’re wearing and the light of the makeup, but glam squad way to go! You are the force to be reckoned with and it’s such a great way to start off this show, because when you hit your falsetto and you go up, it’s just beautiful. It’s like angel singing.”
“Lil I thought it was good. I was a little bit disappointed because I thought it was a bit of a lazy song choice. I thought the second half was better than the first period, and I hate what you’re wearing.”
There was a really nice video with Lil Rounds’s family in Memphis before Lil sang. Her husband Jesse Rounds talked about some of the hardships their family has gone through (losing there home to a tornado), but that they have really stuck together. Lil was talking about people telling her that since she has 3 kids that she had to give up on her dreams of becoming a singer. Lil went on to say that if you let go of your dreams, you let go of your life. She is very right and I am glad she feels that way or we may never have had the chance to hear this woman sing, and that would be a real loss.
Simon Cowell made some comments about Lil’s outfit. He didn’t like it at all which is fine. He obviously thinks she is great, because he went on to hit on her after he made the bad outfit comment. He also made a comment that she made a lazy song choice. I don’t agree, but what he his saying is really a compliment. He knows that she can take on the most difficult songs out there.
Here are the other Michael Jackson or Jackson 5 songs the contestants sang:
Lil Rounds - The Way You Make Me Feel
Scott MacIntyre - Keep The Faith Danny Gokey - PYT (Pretty Young Thing)
Micheal Sarver - You Are Not Alone
Jasmine Murray - I’ll Be There
Kris Allen - Remember The Time
Allison Iraheta - Give Into Me
Anoop Desai - Beat It
Jorge Nunez - Never Gonna Say Goodbye
Megan Corkrey - Rockin’ Robin Adam Lambert - Black or White Matt Giraud - Human Nature
Alexis Grace - Dirty Diana
